People sure can be funny! A farmer will have the most useless weedy old patch of ground in the country, but just wait until an oil company wants a surface lease and suddenly that old piece of dirt is holy ground worth as much as Toronto real estate!!
So the company offers say $3000/acre up front and $500-600acre/yearly rent. The farmer is outraged!!! when in fact he couldn't get $35 acre rent anywhere else!! Suddenly weeds are a major concern! And the farmer is instantly the biggest environmentalist since David Suzuki!!
I have observed the guys who own the mineral rights have a whole different attitude! They look at it as money from heaven and the oil company as the Messiah!!! And why not? They stand to make some real money for a change instead of the chump change they get from grain or cattle.
