Weird weather

Hope those old boys down south got lots of moisture out of this last big snowstorm. None at Red Deer. All we got was a wicked wind that felt like it came from the North Pole! Sure has been cold this spring. No grass growing yet and I haven't seen any crops emerging. Froze pretty hard again last night. Almost makes a person want to get out and do their part to promote global warming!

It rained here north of Regina where I farm(60 miles) an inch and a half yesterday for the first time in 10 months. It will sure help makes me feel a whole bunch more optimistic has been cold here so pastures are still brown. We are still feeding cows for at least three weeks I would think but maybe still pessimisstic lol. Was dam tired of that windy dusty weather.

We got at least a foot of heavy wet snow here south of Calgary. Sure will give the grass and crops a good start. Great moisture. Would sure love to see some warm weather for a while now.

Here where I live between Regina and Saskatoon we received about 3/4 of a inch of rain with some snow. North 15 miles received nothing. Some of my pastures will now grow but I am concerned my hay will soon be done as it has received hardly any.
I think all will be surprised here in Sk. how quickly this moisture will disappear as we are extremely dry.

At least 3 feet of snow fell around Cardston near the U.S. border in Alberta. OUr friends lost some ewes and lambs because the snow fell so fast, by the time they realized it wasn't going to stop and was coming so fast, the sheep couldn't see where they were going so they refused to budge. And the sheep had been sheared on the weekend. The cows and calves managed except now with the wetness, they may come down with pneumonia.

Also there are hundreds of dead birds there now, including my beloved mountain bluebirds. And the bears will be REALLY hungry now. BUT everybody's dugout will be full, which is the silver lining.

Last year and this year have been tough on the birds. I keep a large number of blue bird houses and was a little slack at getting some of them cleaned out. There was a pair of blue birds in one that only had one egg! The tree swallows never even raised any babies last year...no mosquitoes and none so far this year.

Here in east central Alberta it is very dry. The trees are just starting to leaf out and the raspberries are just coming alive. I turned my cows onto part of the hayland as there is nothing else for them. Unless we get timely rain there won't be any hay for the winter either. It seems like Mother Nature has conspired with Father Time as everything is three weeks behind in development. There are very few birds and I have yet to put out the hummingbird feeder.

We are fairly moist here but it's been pretty cool. Froze again last night although yesterday wasn't all that bad. The bam trees are just starting to get leaves. The grass is not growing.
I suspect the hummingbirds are still vacationing in the south!
