While watching a Country Canada show on tobacco farmers in Ontario I was amazed at how the federal government does everything in its power to put these people out of business. It seems they would prefer that the tobacco companies buy their tobacco from Zimbawbwe or Brazil! I guess it looks better!
The same week the feds announced the great farm aid package of 600 million, they also slipped in a little tax of about $1/pack on cigarettes. Now if there are 8 million smokers in Canada at a pack a day that works out to a nice little profit of about $2.9 billion per year. So I guess we know who is paying for the farm aid package? Those old sinners, the smokers!
The price of a package of cigarettes is about $9, of which $1.85 goes to the tobacco industry. The tobbacco farmers, the manufactures, distributers and retailors. Which leaves the federal and provincial governments with a tidy little tax of $7.15! Now multiply that by 8 million packs per day=$57.2 million per day or $20.8 BILLION a year! Not too shabby for not doing anything but collecting the tax!
So considering this kind of obscene revenue does that pittance they call their generous farm aid really seem so generous? I don't know what their take is on booze and gambling but I suspect it could be substantial! We have to come to the conclusion that the drunks, gamblers and smokers are carrying the load for all us little puritans in this country! Our good old mafia style governments couldn't operate without them! Thank heavens for these old sinners!
