Last time around Harper gave Quebec the Québécois Nation Motion and a seat at UNESCO. What is Harper prepared to give Quebec this time around in order to get the Quebec seats he needs to form a minority?

Canada has been a member state of UNESCO since 1946. But the special deal is expected to see Quebec join the organization as an associate member, which would require the support of two-thirds of UNESCO members in a vote.

There are currently only a handful of countries or territories that are associate UNESCO members, including Aruba, the British Virgin Islands, the Netherlands Antilles, the Cayman islands, and the Tokelau Islands in the central Pacific.

Few other details have been made available, but sources say Quebec will have an official representative within Canada's UNESCO office in Paris.

Giving more powers to Quebec is insane. Harper will do anything for votes...the man is not to be trusted.

All provinces should have equal powers under Confederation or Canada will have nothing but squabbles. Pitting one Province against another or favouring one over another is just plain stupid. Harper is not a statesman but a dividing force.

blackjack: That "Green Shaft" thing was an even more stupid plan than Harpo's. Who needs more taxes AND the top-heavy administration that goes along with such a plan. Besides, it was not equitable and subject to interpretation same as that @#%$^ GST.

The "Green Shift" would have hit us in Alberta much harder than the rest of Canada and was nothing more than wealth distribution under another guise.

B.C. started a carbon tax and boy do those pipples hate it...and it gets progressively worse over the next 4 years. I have relatives out there and they will go back to the NDP next election although they are not fond of them either.

It is really great to claim to be the right wing party and to lower taxes but when push comes to shove the Harper government gave billions to our banks (pretty socialist) which by the way benefits a few rich people a lot more than the rest of us. That money is going to have to be repaid from taxes, the banks are not repaying anything.

The present financial/credit crunch is going to have to reshape Governments tax plans. The Conservatives cannot put billions into the financial sector unless they either run a deficit budget or look for tax revenues. I am waiting for Harper to go back to a 7% GST. It was stupid to lower the GST to 5% anyway.

Either way all the G7 governments have injected an incredible amount into the money supply which is generally agreed as being inflationary at the same time as the numbers are showing the global economy is entering a recession/depression. Remember the 30s? Remember the 70s? In the 70s stagflation was blamed on something so benign as the loss of the Peruvian anchovy fishery. Just wait to see what comes out of a collapse of the worlds banking system and the resulting credit crisis. And make no mistake about it, the banking system as it was has collapsed not to mention the financial sector (Dow Jones was over 14000 one year ago, now is 8370, that is a 40% drop most of which happened in the last week). The buildings are still there but it sure is not business as usual.

Lets face it, there is going to a lot smaller economy to tax at the same time as the demand for bailouts increases. The Conservative/Harper Government would have been smarter to maintain taxes where they were in 2005. Better to tax a strong economy than to try to get blood out of stone.

Harper gave away billions to big corporations in the form of reduced taxes and then turned around and gave more billions to big banks. The man is an absolute genius (not). But it will be you and me, the people in the street or in the field who have to pay it all back.

Bottomline we have seen the end of any tax cuts from anyone.

i would agree f_s why are these guys bailing out the banks...i look at the situation the same as our industry after the bse fiasco...did it solve any of the fundamental problems...no...we all know we are selling our product for 40 percent less than we did 7 years ago...so we have had to adjust to the reality with our management decisions...now it will be governments turn...if the private sector has to cut back spending...the government will need to follow ...we as a society have come so accustomed to having govt bail us out...that i'm concerned for the avg joe ...this crisis did not start two weeks ago...in my opinion it started 40 years ago...when govt thought they could do business better than the private sector at fixing our societal ills...

If you like paying taxes I am also sure that the government will not refuse if you send them extra to help the rest of us.
