I know this farmer who leases some land from Ducks Unlimited. They seem to own a fair bit of land in the county I live in. Anyway in 2002 the drought was bad and they decided he needed to get his cows off the lease because there was some frogs or something that might get trampled. Apparently in the fine print this cancellation was possible. So he had to sell a bunch of cows into a depressed market...cows he'd bought at high prices a couple of years before when he got this lease! He was not a happy camper!
Maybe we need more Ducks Unlimited type organizations to buy up all the pasture land? Then we could just turn it all into a duck and frog ranch and get rid of a lot of cows? Why we might be able to get our cow numbers down to a point where we could handle the meat? And as an added bonus we could bring in the Japanese tourists to take pictures of all the frogs and ducks?
