(Reuters) - Russian media cited an unnamed source on Sunday as saying that Ukraine was close to building a plutonium-based "dirty bomb" nuclear weapon, although the source cited no evidence.

Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered an invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24, with the aim to "demilitarise" and "denazify" its pro-Western neighbour and prevent Kyiv from joining NATO.

The West, dismissing that rationale as a pretext, has responded with harsh sanctions on Moscow and heavy military and other aid to Kyiv.

The TASS, RIA and Interfax news agencies quoted "a representative of a competent body" in Russia on Sunday as saying Ukraine was developing nuclear weapons at the destroyed Chernobyl nuclear power plant that was shut down in 2000.

Ukraine's government has said it had no plans to rejoin the nuclear club, having given up its nuclear arms in 1994 following the break-up of the Soviet Union.

Shortly before the invasion, Putin said in a grievance-filled speech that Ukraine was using Soviet know-how to create its own nuclear weapons, and that this was tantamount to preparation for an attack on Russia.

He cited no evidence for his claim.

Thought Russians had a potential dirty bomb with that power plant. Remains to be seen how that goes. Putin makes all kinds of crap up like Trudeau Hitler or Trump. Maybe Baghdad Bob is advising him with war propaganda.

Tom, you need to take some deep breaths, emotions are getting the best of you.

There will always be new info coming to light until in fact you find out, there weren’t any weapons of mass destruction.

It’s usually the overreaction that causes the most damage, psychologically and physically.

They (politicians and oligarchs) are all guilty of playing the peasants for fools . It’s a sad world .
After the past 6 months for me I fully realize to be thankful to live and who got most us here with hard work and honest living where we live but we need to stand up to the forces trying to take away everything that made us who we are in Canada and is especially western Canadian.
Look around the world , we are fortunate, but for a reason . The sacrifice before us is was immense by all . None of our forefathers were Canadian till we earned it regardless of previous culture , religion or race .
God bless our veterans and forefathers that built what we have and let us never ever give that up .
