Fort Macleod councillor, two others, charged with being ‘key participants’ at Coutts blockade

In a release, Alberta RCMP say Marco Van Huigenbos, 32, of Fort Macleod; Alex Van Herk, 53, of Fort Macleod; and Gerhard (George) Janzen, 43, of Taber have each been charged with mischief over $5,000.

As an indictable offence, a conviction on that charge carries with it a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.

Police allege the three were “key participants” of the blockade, which severely limited traffic flow across the Canada-U.S. border from Jan. 29 to Feb. 15.

The protest was in response to the government’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, including vaccine requirements related to certain industries and forms of travel. The blockade was estimated to have cost Canada $44 million per day in lost trade revenue.

The three charged are set to appear in Lethbridge provincial court on Oct. 4.

Van Huigenbos, a Fort Macleod town councillor, was given a letter of reprimand from the council in late March for allegedly being an “organizer” and “spokesperson” of the blockade.

Fort Macleod Mayor Brent Feyter said his office was made aware of the pending charges before they were announced and said nothing changes for the town council based on this new development.

“We’ve had some discussions with our council based on the Municipal Government Act and there’s nothing that precludes someone to be sitting on council unless they’re convicted,” said Feyter.

The Municipal Government Act says a councillor can be disqualified from their position if they are convicted of an offence punishable by imprisonment for five or more years.

I have a family member like this and how they treated their own children could in this day be charged for mental abuse. Narcissists have little to no empathy but can feign it enough to trick people. A psychologist or criminal investigator can usually identify them with a few questions. Narcissists and psychopaths can not be cured.
