I don't know who invented the 99.8% stat. But it isn't wrong for most of the population.
Break that down by age group. People under the age of 50 have a survival rate far higher than 99.8.
Only in the elderly does the survival rate fall below that threshold. With those over 85 340 times more likely to die of covid than the 18 to 29 reference group.

“Confirmed cases”. Please explain once Omicron was identified, at least in Canada, there was no longer mandatory testing. Most went to a self administered rapid tests with no reporting. In that environment how does one establish the number of confirmed cases? I know many people that had it more than once according to self administered rapid tests, no one reported. Confirmed cases would therefore be grossly under reported!

The rate among those under 19 years old was higher, at 60 per cent. Nearly everyone I know has had it, some multiple times. Very few of those cases were ever reported.
For the sake of argument, assume everyone the world has had it at least once by now. Probably not a bad assumption after three years of circling the globe in the era of global travel.
That would result in a 99.92% survival rate. If we have all had it twice, the. We are up to 99.96% survival rate. Then if you honestly only count those who died of covid, instead of with... Well, you get the picture.
