Premier pressured justice minister's office to get rid of COVID charges, sources say

Elise von Scheel, Meghan Grant, Janet French · CBC News · Posted: Jan 25, 2023 2:07 PM CST | Last Updated: 10 hours ago

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith pressured the attorney general and his office to intervene in COVID-related court cases, according to multiple sources familiar with the interactions.

Exchanges between the premier's office and Justice Minister Tyler Shandro's office over several months included what sources characterized as attempts to influence cases.

"I would classify it as inappropriate," one source close to the situation said. CBC News has agreed not to name them because of potential professional repercussions.

Smith would ask for updates on cases or inquire whether it would be possible to abandon them, they said.

This specifically included the prosecution of Artur Pawlowski, a pastor charged with two counts of criminal mischief and a charge under Alberta's Critical Infrastructure Defence Act related to the Coutts border blockade.

Another source with knowledge of the situation confirmed Smith committed to taking that case to Shandro with the intent to make the charges go away.

Oh shit Danny this story isn't going away and the search of emails only goes back 30 days! " there was nothing" Are you sure Danny? Cause you more or less admitted in public that you wanted the charges dropped.

Danny is just trying to protect the "most discriminated group" in society from more discrimination. LOL

Trudeau broke rules in SNC-Lavalin affair, says ethics tsar

The findings of the report could cause trouble for Justin Trudeau's Liberals in the October election.

The ethics commissioner says Mr Trudeau improperly tried to influence a former minister in the SNC-Lavalin affair.

Earlier this year, former justice minister and attorney general Jody Wilson-Raybould accused Mr Trudeau and his staff of spending months trying to convince her that taking SNC-Lavalin to trial would cost Canadians jobs, and their party votes.

Her accusation proved to be politically costly for Mr Trudeau - leading to the resignation of two high-profile cabinet ministers, his top personal aide and the head of the federal bureaucracy - and cast a shadow over his leadership.

Ms Wilson-Raybould said the commissioner's report was a "vindication" of her position that she was improperly pressured by Mr Trudeau and his staff.

"The Prime Minister, directly and through his senior officials, used various means to exert influence over Ms Wilson‑Raybould," said Mr Dion in a statement released with his 63-page report on Wednesday.

He said the authority of the Mr Trudeau and his office "was used to circumvent, undermine and ultimately attempt to discredit the decision" by Ms Wilson-Raybould and the federal prosecution service not to go ahead with a deferred prosecution agreement for SNC-Lavalin.

She should protect them as she should! I am sure if you or your kids were detained unjustly, you would be thankful if she sacrificed herself for you. She is a human being with a heart who is not afraid to stand up for peoples rights. You may not like that but I sure do. No tyranny there like some other politicians.

Both cases are inappropriate breaches of ethics and in the Alberta case obstruction and direct political interference in the justice system.

In the SNC case it was an attempt to enact a deferred prosecution agreement and was a disagreement between the prime minister and the minister of justice. There was no attempt to have the charges dropped.

In the Daniel Smith case she pressured the justice minster and the crown prosecutors office to drop the charges completely. A much more serious interference in the justice system.

"The premier spent several days clarifying conflicting comments on her contact with Crown prosecutors about these cases. She initially stated she had talked directly to prosecutors before then saying she had only spoken with her justice minister.

Sure Danny. The story keeps changing.

Why do you think the PM disagreed with the Minister of Justice on her decision to prosecute SNC.

As I remember, the deffered prosection agreement which is also used by governments in other countries which are our competitors, would still allow for SNC to bid for government contracts.

The assumption was that a crimminal conviction would cost lots of SNC jobs. Ministers do not always agree in any government on policy or course of actions.

No doubt governments of all types are lobbied by corporations in the business of contracting for the government

You can read all about the SNC Lavalin Affair on Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SNC-Lavalin_affair

Chuck2 the CBC and Rachel Notley continue to slander Premier Smith with no proof of the existence of the emails in question or to the identity of the source or sources. Nothing more than a BS hit piece from the CBC. Funny how the only Premier in Canada that is subjected to constant attacks from the CBC in an Alberta Premier be it Danielle Smith today or Jason Kenney prior to that!!!

Double Down Danny said in public she as much contacted the Justice minister and prosecutors and wanted charges dropped.

But she can't quite get the story straight, it has changed so many times.

And you blame journalists for her stupidity! Pretty lame excuses. LOL

Elon Musk paid 40 billion for Twitter to influence the content to free speech.
                            Bloomberg paid big for newspapers.
                            Amazon owner has them.

Trudeau has his own media with CBC etc. Taxpayers pay.

Does anyone else feel like we are back on the playground in grade three, and the bully with an IQ smaller than his shoesize is using the entirety of his creative genius to call the other kids names by shortening their name and adding a Y?

I've never encountered an adult who behaves like this.
