The example you provided of the ransacked house would not in my mind warrant a jail sentence. And not all youth crimes are dealt with community service. Myself, and this is just my opinion, putting children in jail is something from Dickens, not 2006. Fourteen is pretty young. You mentioned 15, getting closer. 16 yes if the situation warranted it. Youth crime does need to be dealt with seriously however but jail is probably not the answer.

When I think of youth crime I am most familiar with the Cook murders. Robert Cook was in trouble with the law at the age of 12. The more I learn about the case, including listening to Judge MacNaughton who was Cooks’s defence lawyer at the time speak on the case, I am convinced that Cook and youth like him have very, very severe behavioral problems that are not solved by time in jail. I would hope, in fact I know, that children with behavioral problems can be diagnosed and helped. I have occasion to pass the gravesite of the family Cook murdered and am reminded each time that jail did not work for that family even though jail sentencing was harsh in the late 50s and early 60s. Just my opinion. If Cook could have gotten the psychiatric help he needed it would have done everyone involved a world of good. Psychiatric care is not a joke.

I don't buy Layton's excuse that crime is due to homelessness and poverty. There are communities in Alberta that are extremely affluent, where the above criminal activity by youth is a weekly occurance.
I agree that many of our youth are troubled, and a large reason for that is dysfunctional families where kids have no-one to set a good example or look up to, however, molly coddling them when they commit adult crimes isn't the answer.

The Bowden Institution used to be a place where young offenders were sent, and I know a couple of them that were packed off there for petty theft etc. when they were considered still 'kids', and they are upstanding members of our community today, and grandparents to boot !!! They would be the first to tell you that getting thrown in Bowden gave them an attitude adjustment or they would have likely done hard time in the old Fort Sask. jail before too many years passed.

There needs to be the ability for people to take back their communities from gangs of thugs regardless of how old the gang members are. Parents need to be held accounatable for the actions of their children if they are considered under age....maybe then some of these kids would have better things to do, because somebody would be making sure they were at home or in some organized activity that didn't include mugging old ladies !!!

We can't defend ourselves during a home invastion because we can't own a hand gun and if we don't register our long guns we will end up in jail long before the kid who trashes our home does !!!
I went out to feed my calves grain a few years back and my quad was gone....I called the RCMP and learned that a couple of 14 yar old runaways were on the loose in my community.
The RCMP found my quad where it had run out of gas a half mile from home....they caught the little darlings who were hitchiking to Edson to see friends. They couldn't press charges because they didn't have any proof because no-one had seen them with the quad. It was the second one they had stollen during the same night.

They got away with doing it and likely thought it was a big joke.

#1- foreign ownership. Already done. Would you like it better if we were a third world country or something?
#2-Canadian banks. How do Canadian banks compete with the big foreign banks the government has already allowed into this country? Do you think we should let them go broke because they can't compete due to lack of economy of scale?
#3-Wheat board. This is a relic of the past that has no place in a free society. It is in fact no different than the old communist USSR collective system.
#4-CRTC and Canadian content. The fact is American content is better in my opinion. Don't need the communist government telling me what I should watch or listen to? I'm a big boy now...don't need a nanny wiping my nose.
#5-Profit health care. If the government can contract cheaper service than a public system then why not? Private companies will always deliver cheaper than a public system...especially the bloated out of control system we have now.
#6-Patent protection for drug companies. Who else is going to pay for the research? The government won't.
#7-Student loans. Why should a young person be discriminated against because Daddy has some money? What happens if Daddy doesn't intend to share? My own children were not eligible for student loans and it just wasn't fair!
#8-14 years old tried as adults. Well they can screw whatever they desire but they can't do the time when they butcher somebody?
#9-Missile defence. Hey it won't cost us anything and actually would have generated some jobs? Sort of a no brainer in my opinion.
#10- Joint security with the USA. The USA has a bunch of psychos out to destroy it. Now how hard is it to understand that they see Canada as a pipeline where terrorists and criminals get in the back door? Right now they are trying this little Arab murderer down in Cuba, who comes from Canada? The whole family are a pack of cut throats and we allow them to stay here and extend them every courtesy? Do you ever get a little shaky about that situation? Haven't we pretty well let in every lowlife criminal and terrorist in the world?
Can you blame the US for being upset? Next time you are held up at the border(or your cattle, grain etc.) for hours you can thank your Liberal masters for creating that situation.

So yes I like all those proposals! Glad you brought them up because every one of them will improve our country and make it a better place to live. Stand up for Canada!

Cowman. Got to hand it to you, you sure get up early in the morning. And yes the Conservatives policies are going to suit some people. As long as people know what they are voting for. I would say that the Canadian banks going broke does not seem to be concern given their profits. And if the banks consolidate the service charges will very quickly be even more out of line. But if that is OK with you, then by all means vote Conservative.

And you may be quite comfortable with Harpers views that we should get rid of the RCMP too. But not everyone will be.

Rather than Stand Up for Canada the Conservative slogan, in my opinion, is Let’s Become More Like the USA. Again, some will be just fine with that but not everyone will be.

FS: I doubt a consolidated bank would raise charges...well at least no worse than they have been doing! Lot of foreign banks around now as well as our own home grown credit unions? Can't expect the Canadian banks to compete with the big boys internationally if they don't have some clout? Who really cares if they bank at the Royal bank or the Bank of Hong Kong in this day and age? Sort of like buying a Toyota or a GM...doesn't really matter?
I sure agree the RCMP should be gone! Lets give those jobs to our Alberta boys instead of a bunch of Frenchmen! I believe police are like governments...the closer they get to the people the more effective they are! Don't need any national state police enforcing "made in Ottawa" laws that have no relevance out here.
