The Right Honourable Stephen Harper,
Prime Minister Designate
House of Commons
Ottawa, ON
K1A 0A6
Dear Mr. Harper:
First, please accept my congratulations on your re-election to the
House, and to the victory of the Conservative Party in forming the
Government of Canada. It couldn't have come at a better time.
I am sure that you are aware of the persecution that I, as a law-abiding
gun owner, have had to endure under the anti-gun ideology of the Liberal
Party of Canada. I trust that you recognize the loyalty and the support
that the responsible firearms community has given first the Reform
Party, then the Alliance and now the Conservative Party of Canada. Of
primary concern to us is the immediate utter repeal and dismantling of
the Firearms Act and the Registry, including the 12(6) prohibited
handgun classification.
We feel that Yorkton-Melville Saskatchewan MP Garry Breitkreuz should be
intimately involved in this process, and as such should be accorded, at
the very least, the position of Deputy Minister of Justice. His hard
work and detailed knowledge of the firearms file is second to none. We
look forward to working with him closely.
Other initiatives that should be taken, sooner rather than later, is
replacing the anti-gun Commissioner of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police
Zaccardelli with someone who is less of an ideologue. Also, the
Commissioner of Firearms, William V. Baker, must be replaced with
someone considerably more sympathetic to the firearms owners of Canada.
There is much more that needs to be done to restore the rights of
law-abiding gun owners. These include enshrining property rights in the
Charter, strengthening the right to self defence in the law, and even
recognizing the Canadian right to keep and bear arms. I look forward to
working with you and your Government to making Canada into the proud
nation it once used to be, for generations to come.
Sincerely,
Bruce N. Mills
