One other thing Rod: not sure what you meant when you commented on the former Reeve expanding his income? Maybe we aren't talking about the same guy? I was talking about Mr. Johnston, who I believe was an honorable man, although really out there? He was a lawyer who dealt with international trade law, not your average ambulance chaser or something like that? In reality his wife was the breadwinner as she was a doctor and specialist! And despite the low opinion most of the electorate held of him he was a very smart man! Yep, Greg was a arrogant little bugger and you had to get to know him, to really understand him...but I don't think he was ever crooked or anything like that
? In reality he was a civically minded citizen...just too full of himself?

      Cowman

I didn't mean that he was doing anything illegal but from what I understand, he was trying to make it into a more of a full time job than it really required.

Just got home from the meeting. The afternoon meeting on planning was a bust with two people walking in on a different mission but took an interest and stayed. Evening meeting was a private consultation as I was really the only civilian there as one of the councillors brought his wife.

If people don't get what they want they better not complain.

Cowman, going to law school does not make one a lawyer.

Sorry, but I don't buy into the argument that we would be stuck with someone the ilk of the former Reeve. Surely the voters would be more astute than that because he never made any kind of attempt to cover up who and what he was about.

Many elected folk spend a great deal of their time making sure they stay in the position and I can't see an elected Reeve being any different.

We can't really say that the existing way has worked pretty well when we don't know any different. I would say that there have been some major challenges over the years i.e. some missing money.

Now Linda, I know the story going around was he never passed the bar, but I don't know if that was true or not? He had no problem calling himself a lawyer(every chance he got) and he told me he was involved in international trade law?
And yes he didn't hide the fact he was using municipal politics as a stepping stone to bigger things?
Love him or hate him he sure kept things hopping and the papers buzzing!

Oh, and Linda the missing money was really just a case of nobody minding the store? There weren't enough safeguards in place to stop a wily thief?
But you are right when you say "How do we know if an elected reeve is better or not, when we've never had one". I do believe we are going to get that chance next election and I think it will be interesting to see who goes for it? Definitely the present reeve and I suspect the councillor in division six? Do you see any wild cards entering the race?

In our municipality a recycled councillor and former reeve who hadn't been on council for six years ran and won the reeve job.
Unfortunately he is a sit on the fence person and the local town is really taking advantage of that to push annexation again and also wine and dine him once a month so they can pursuade him to go to bat for them on other issues eg. Landfill.

When he was elected one of the councillors wanted to develop terms of reference for his position but the rest of the council being new, called him the BOSS and said he could do what he wanted to.

He is honest but certainly does not share all his activities with the rest of council nor the public so no-one really knows what is going on.

I would suspect that someone will run against him next time, and for sure he will run because he has never made as much money in his life !!!
