Well we are on second day of virtually no wind electricity generation in Alberta. One of Chuck2’s solutions is to provide power to the grid by drawing power from all the EV batteries. Here is my question, how does the grid operator, in Alberta’s case the AESO, know that your car is plugged in so that it can draw power from it? Would all car chargers have to be tied into a central data base? Could they then decide if power production was down you couldn’t charge your car, therefore be unable to drive that day? Or conversely if your car was charged and you didn’t plug it in could they ticket you for non-compliance? No wonder governments are pushing EV’s, it is all about control.

More conspiracies from Hamloc about control with EVs?

The grid is not set up to do draw from EVs yet. But that is what engineers and planners have been thinking about for future grid design.

Some battery backup is being planned and installed in Alberta to provide more grid stabilization.

The federal government will allow gas plants to backup intermittent renewables.

With all the new gas plants coming on line in Alberta, backup will be just the flip of a switch away.

And renewable capacity and generation can continue to increase and continue to reduce carbon emissions.

With your own solar system you can charge your own EV using a lot of your own electricity.

how logical is that November through end Feb ?
Probably help in summer I guess

The southern prairies are the sunniest and dryest parts of Canada and actually produce a significant amount of solar energy in winter.

December and January are low production months, But February March are actually pretty good with low sun angles. PV panels are more efficient at colder temperatures and the suns energy reflects well off of the snow.

And of course wind energy, hydro and fossil fuel grid backup can do the rest.

EVs are 80% efficient compared to 20% for ICEs means that overall we will need much less energy because of the efficiency gains.

CC will just stay home like a good EV owner. Intermittent power, Cold house, waiting for wind or sun...

what do you think CC of the plan in europe to feed the cows some chemical to make them fart less ? will that come to canada ? is your NFU pushing for that ? you are the expert on everything , give us your opinion

For the average working stiff who leaves home in the dark and arrives home in the dark most of the winter.

For about the last week here I sweep the cement off 3 times a day.
If I had panels out in the field that would be inconvenient and time consuming.
Time is money for most people?
If I had panels on the roof that would be a no go.

Production at this time of year is fundamentally insignificant?

Is that a fair assessment Chuck?

As far as I know none of the grid scale solar facilities have any means to clean snow off of panels. They readily admit that production this time of year is not enough to pay the labour for cleaning them off. Says a lot.
Perhaps Chuck knows of some exceptions?

Not sure if this belongs in the Covid thread, or the failed renewable energy thread. So I posted it in both.

Is the Economist a credible source, Chuck??
