Why are pickups such a suburban status symbol when few families need that much car?

Longer range plug in hybrids will cover off all the issues and deliver significant amounts of GHG emission reductions in rural areas and colder parts of the world. Most people only drive a few kilometers each day which can easily covered by electric.

Most of the market for EVs exists in much warmer climates where cold weather is not an issue. California is a bigger market than all of Canada.

And electrification of many things is going to continue. And the the technology will improve.

And longer range plug in hybrids will be allowed under the ban on ICE only vehicles.

Hopefully we get reliable nuclear power before we all get forced into going all electric.

Gas with carbon capture and storage (CCS) will be allowed under the clean energy regs and gas without CCS can be used to backstop renewables when needed on an emergency basis.

If you build excess capacity in all generation sources you can use a lot more renewables to reduce emissions and still have a reliable supply.

The goal which Alberta and Saskatchewan agree with, is to go net zero by 2050 instead of 2035. Only 15 years difference.

And that will make electricity cheaper?

so we need to have and maintain two systems ?

and the proven reliable system still needs to be big enough to supply all needed power when the other is sitting doing notting !

For my understanding I will give this analogy. Young fellow comes home to farm with lots of ideas to switch the farm over to organic/regenerative etc. Father is a bit apprehensive but realizes best lessons are hard ones. To no one’s surprise it is a weedy money losing failure. Thank god dad is there to bail his ass out. Now, if father gave the kid a quarter to try it out and learn from there then he’d figure it out.

So what is a cheaper source of low emission electricity other than renewables including hydro all backed up with natural gas when needed?

Very expensive, unproven, unlicensed, small modular nuclear reactors that are a long way away from being built, won't solve the supply issue.

And almost no private sector investor wants to invest in nuclear unless they are subsidized by taxpayers. Open your wallets for the most expensive option.

Smells like GREEN shite and the blessed EV subsidies!

So why do so many of you support highly subsidized and expensive nuclear over lower cost solutions? And then complain about subsidies?

Are you aware of two European countries named France and Germany? France using non subsidized nuclear, Germany using massively subsidized wind and solar? France Has drastically lower costs, and CO2 emissions.

Unproven? They have used small modular nuclear in all sorts of Submarines and Aircraft carriers for DECADES.

Nuclear accounts for over 70% of France’s electricity needs. Think they buy a fair bit of uranium from Canada. Kind of funny we bugger around with pinwheels and magnifying glasses we buy from abroad but ship off our fuel supplies.

Don’t worry there’s a floating avatar of Peter Prebble in Chucks kitchen telling him what to type. No changing his opinion as he’s peters marionette.
