Government to cut small business carbon tax rebate

In a February 22, 2024 press release from the Canadian Federation of Independent Business.

”Ottawa’s decision to cut the share of carbon tax revenues allocated to small business — while it has yet to return anything — is deeply insulting says the CFIB.”

”New documents published by the federal government last Friday reveal that Ottawa is reducing the amount of carbon tax revenue it plans to rebate to small and medium-sized businesses from 9% to 5% starting in 2024. Meanwhile, the amount allocated for consumers and Indigenous governments will increase to 93% and 2% respectively.”

“While consumers are getting more in rebates, small businesses just keep getting the short end of the stick”, Kelly said. “This is unacceptable and a slap in the face to all small firms, especially as CFIB estimates small and medium sized businesses actually pay 40% of carbon tax revenue.”

Looks to me like if businesses are paying 40% of the revenue but getting nothing back($2.5 billion in SME rebates sitting on books in Ottawa since 2019, not yet payed) that the whole carbon tax program needs to be audited. If as Trudeau claims 80% get back more than they pay is he doing this on the back of business? Or if 80% of consumers get their money back but small business gets nothing where is all the money going?! The media don’t seem to cover this, is this because of pro carbon tax media bias?!

A rebate is receiving a portion back that you have paid, it’s a smaller payment that you have made.

Chuck2, please find me a quote of where I said there wasn’t rebates? The rebates are all about wealth transfer and vote buying, this has always been my opinion.

Chuck2, if every 3 months the government rebated back to a smoker more money than they had payed in tobacco taxes would the tobacco taxes still be an incentive to quit smoking?

If you cut carbon emissions and pay less carbon tax and still get the rebate you are farther ahead.

Its an incentive to reduce emissions just like the government taxes and provides incentives for all kinds of things.

Whats a better lower cost alternative to replace the carbon tax then? Cause Curly Moe said he couldnt find one. And he has his own carbon tax on large emitters which also costs something. Plus he raised the PST and won't cut gas taxes like Wab Kinew.

Danny Smith just raised gas taxes as well and then says this is about affordability? Huh?

Farmers and small businesses get lower taxes and write offs and subsidies that many other people don't get. Should we cut those as well?

As per usual you didn’t respond to anything in my initial post. Justin Trudeau hasn’t answered a question asked of him in nine years with an answer that was actually related to the question, a true example of how disconnected from reality progressive politicians are.

Yeah, well Little PP never answers hard questions, avoids interviews and blames the media and puts down reporters at every opportunity. And you are cheering this on?

"The Press is the enemy of the people" kind of attitude.
