I wouldn’t say they’re a monopoly. Yet. They could get there one day. But then regular farmers could compete with them better if they lived similarly; no holidays, better team work, less infighting, no divvying up land between families, etc.

But who’s going to do that.
Just imagine the economic advantage if farmers didn't have to buy the land all over again with each generation change. Or buying out non farming siblings.

I am fine with the minimalistic lifestyle, my wife might need some convincing...

You’re quite the hypocrite there AgStar. Calling out posters as KKK and nazis in the Rainbow thread but singling out Hutterites in another. Live and let live I thought?

I’ve lived in Manitoba and Alberta. There’s no comparison between land prices and Hutterite colonies between the two.

I probably seem intolerant, I’m not, I couldn’t give two shitts if someone is gay or not but having those flags flying with the Canadian flag and at schools is utter disgraceful.

He's in good company with his hypocrisy.
Forage was beating his chest about his farm not needing any help to be competitive just a few days ago. Now on this thread he's ranting that his farm can't compete with hutterites. Reading between the lines, sounds like he agrees with egg star that the government should intervene so he can compete to maintain his higher standard of living and cost of production

I would guarantee that my cost of production is lower than theirs. I seem to be competing successfully. And I pay my child labor generously we pay our hired help very generously

I did not call out their lifestyle just their predatory land ownership. I could care less about their hypocritical lifestyle.

Since when is it predatory to live within your means, work hard, invest for the long-term, and do it all within the current legal framework?

                    You sound entitled.

Forage and Chuck like to play fast and loose with the facts. Then run away and never acknowledge that they made it all up.

They don't necessarily work hard. They are land banking without regard to the productivity of land.

Then explain how they are paying for it? Do you think they have outside investors? So called old money?
Could it be they buy less productive land because that's the only thing that is for sale? I know if waited for the most productive land to come up for sale I would still be waiting. The farmers with the most productive land are also the most profitable generation after generation and least likely to have to sell. Around here, they're not afraid to put the work into the less productive land to make it productive land. The same thing I am doing.

Predatory would indicate that they are taking advantage of widows and orphans in dire straits forcing them to sell at fire sale prices. What you were describing is being overly generous to the vendors. That is the opposite of predatory.
