    Semi Crash Kills Mother/Daughter.

    Here we go again. Another immigrant trucker blows a stop sign and kills innocent people, this time in rural Manitoba. So sad.

    These guys should not be allowed to drive trucks. Period.

        should the drivers license requirements be loosened and lightened for grain farmers like we have in Alberta just recently?

        I wish the story had more information. Was weather and issue..drugs alcohol... ?
        pretty vague but if hes on the run then even he knows how badly this went and how at fault he was.

          No, weather was not an issue. Nice clear calm evening.
          Wide open intersection, with no blind spots to any direction.
          "Stop Ahead" sign and multiple sets of rumble strips leading up to a visible stop sign.
          An additional 2 cars were were behind the car that was hit. (=3 sets of headlights heading towards truck driver)

            Devil's advocate question.
            Are the greater percentage of foreign born drivers that bad. Or is it simply that the majority of drivers are now foreign born??
            Either way, I did stupid crap with a rig when I was 20. But yes, an intersection is an intersection.
            Know a guy who went for his MELT last fall. 2 month commitment driving to Edmonton 5 days a week.
            He was in a low income govt funded program. All other students from India. Some had driven trucks over there. Those guys needed the automatic transmission endorsement. Bad habits learned early can't be taught out?
            I've always said treat it like a trade.
            The volume of traffic today and the inexperienced operators demand it?

              Bad habits and poor attitude by a percentage of the group give them all a bad wrap. The cocky idiots exist in all cultures but don’t kid yourself they play the system until they can’t. When oil was hot around here it wasn’t hard to register a company and buy a truck or two and go hauling fluid. Few foreign nationals would do such and make no payments and skip when repo man came a knocking. 12 months of receipts from hauling fluid without many if any pesky expenses could set you up for life back in your home country. Now if you go to buy a truck you have to sign a personal guarantee. Still though there are lots of foreign guys trucking around the patch and they’re mostly decent guys. The dinks get weeded out.

                There is undoubtably a big problem with scammers running some of the training outfits that put some of these drivers on the road.
                Including some that do basic drivers licenses.

                  Driving is considered a laborers job.
                  Trucking is an easy entry/exit level industry hence low margins.
                  So how do you regulate it into trade level training and pay? Dunno.
                  Maybe AI would've stopped at the sign.

                    Immigrants should have to hold a Class 5 drivers license in Canada for 5 continuous years with no absences from the country before they can take a course for a higher license class. Then they can experience winter driving, rural driving, city driving, etc.

                    Also driver training for Class 1A should be 3 months minimum. Mine was 30 years ago so why not now? I took a course that was 2 weeks classroom, 4 weeks driving, then drivers test, you got your license, then 6 weeks on the job training. I did not collect a wage during the course or on the job training, but did collect unemployment. It was a back to work course offered by unemployment, ie the government.

                    When I was done, I was fairly well prepared as I did lots of city stuff, backing into warehouses in brutally tight places. I pulled all sizes of trailers, backed all of them up, did deck work, van work, straight truck, forklift, dangerous goods, whmis, city work, highway work, warehouse loading/unloading/cross docking. But to be honest, I still had a lot to learn after the 3 months, but it was a good start.

                      The attraction for the south Asians is the expanded paid hours that are available.
                      They are especially looking for per mile pay.
                      Not hard to see why they fill a lot of the seats as it is hard nowadays to find locals that are looking for extra hours and are motivated by money.

                      Imagine having an employee that always wanted more hours and only complained when you sent him home.
                      If you only give them regular work weeks they soon find a second job.

                        U can find huge mansions around Edmonton with gravel trucks parked outside.

                          There are a lot of questionable semi drivers and they all can't be south asian because most of the local semis in our area have locals driving.

                          Absolutely, new drivers need better training, but often industry groups and farmers argue against better training and higher requirements. It costs more money and time.

                          I don't know how many times a slow moving semi has pulled out in front of us because they wont wait for traffic! Yeah thanks alot you idiot!

                          Not to mention that a very large percentage of their trucks, when stopped won't pass a safety. That's not very reassuring!

                          We do about 5000 kms a year and get our farm semi safetied once a year or so.

                          And what about all those farmers pulling or driving farm equipment on the highways? They kill a few people a year too. They also need better training and better attention to safety which is lacking on many farms. Hence the large number of farm related "accidents" many of which could have been prevented.

                            A four year old knows what a stop sign is. Flashing red stop signs with rumble strips is really hard to miss! No amount of training can fix someone that ignores those safety measures.
