The conservative opposition leader here somewhere between centre right and far right he ok with it all.

”kids need to realise the world doesn’t end if they don’t access there social media for a few days.

onus is on tech giants to come up with some sort of id system

kids being hammered that Palestine good Israel bad , climate change fat shaming, covid was end of the world do kids really need this let parents pass there judgement rather than social media

it’s a can of worms most Aussies see nothing sinister in it big brother from govt etc

Cut and paste apologies only short. From astralian financial review

??????Currently, if you want to “verify” yourself on LinkedIn you require a passport, and most people would be wary of trusting such documents to the likes of Meta, Snap or X.

Experts say that other age verification methods exist, but none of them is as watertight as an official government-issued credential. Other methods might include credit card verification for those over 18 or debit cards for over 16s, facial analysis software, parental controls, or links to an external verification body such as the government-run Document Verification Service.

The issue of government-issued IDs being required quickly became controversial (https://www.afr.com/technology/canberra-takes-on-big-tech-and-gen-alpha-with-social-media-bans-20241108-p5kowz), and the government amended the legislation this week to quell the anger.

The amendment says that social media platforms are prohibited from requiring users to provide government-issued ID or exclusively use an accredited digital ID service for verifying age.

You tube is exempt not sure how they came to that decision. Twitter is included false info from me apologies.

Fine line could one sort of compare agriville to social media.

Occasionally i get a gobbing from one chap only on here is it bullying or free speech??
His perogative have reached out but blocked his perogative again. Adults we work it out had a disagreement with agstarr once we sorted it privately exchanged cell phone numbers alls good but kids under 16 may not have same mental aptitude to sort things out or ignore.

I dont agree with govt over reach in this one more common sense approach to what will be a growing problem?

Just a thought.
Instead of an age limit, maybe a maturity limit? Just like a drivers test, you don't automatically get your license just because you turned 16, you must prove you are competent, and it can be taken away if you prove to be incompetent or irresponsible at any age.

There must be an emotional IQ test that we could all take occasionally to obtain and maintain our privilege to use SM. Has to be done at the registries office so you can't cheat.
There are probably many 10 years olds who have the maturity to safely navigate SM responsibly, then there are some adults (I'm sure we all know someone like this) who never will reach that level of competence.

Can of worms AB5.

When SM became a thing wasnt interested then walked a swedish girl down the aisle in 2011 and had friends to visit in denmark switzerland germany and sweden of course so i succumbed was a great way to keep tabs when travelling and keep your next visit aware of where you were etc.

Never really a vehicle to push a agenda for me.

I would worry a large part of the adult population would fail that. Agriville might become a ghost town if we had to pass a maturity test to post

Convince me that that outcome would be a problem?

Quality vs quantity.

A small handful of posters who only occasionally post here probably provide 90% of the useful valuable information.

And even smaller number of blow-hards probably provide 90% of the volume and 0% of the constructive posts.

If you start telling adults they aren't mature enough to contribute then they're going to start spouting even more theories that the government is out to control them because they're just so darn intelligent and can see right through them.

Lacking maturity is very similar to lacking intelligence. The more you lack, the more you actually think you have.

Dunning Kruger effect.

To be clear, I'm not advocating for such censorship. Just throwing it out there as one possibility.

It would be nice. Just not terribly realistic sadly.

It's down to our own power to associate with the immature and ignorant or not. Can't have the government censorship save us from everything.

What is the news censorship youve mentioned occasionally?

News here uncensored. Evening standard news neither left or right leaning in my opinion. Its the talk shows following is where you get left right bias. Pick you poison. Again most of the talk shows are in agreeance about social media ban just the implementation they get argumentative.

I'm not sure that would be the long term result.

How many knowledgeable people with moderate views, thin skin and a lot to contribute take one look at the cesspool that most SM degenerates into thanks to the minority of overbearing voices, and say no thanks?

Would the silent majority slowly trickle in if they weren't attacked and threatened with being called flat earther's(and a lot worse) for having a view point not quite as extreme as the extreme elements who dominate SM?
