Justine Bateman tells L.A. Mayor, “ If you are going to run a city, you have to take care of basics”. Discussions are taking place about how city and forestry mismanagement allowed a little fire to become unmanageable, burning down billions of dollars of homes and businesses and killing more than 16 people.

Hundred mile per hour winds, miles of overhead power lines thru brush and trees, steep canyons, thousands of neighbours that would bitch to no end if an organized community decided it should burn out thicket laden undergrowth on calm windless days, and idiots with matches. Easy task. What could go wrong!
It is difficult enough to avoid a fire situation on a flat, treeless, worked prairie in a sparse population. My friend took his harrow, wired a few car tires to it, took it to his flax harvested field, lit the tires on a calm day, dragged it east a full mile, north a half mile, started back west, wind picked up as the fire passed his harrows and he baled out to the neighbour's summer fallow field before the fire engulfed his tractor. Said it didn't take ten minutes to blacken the entire half section.

The flat earthers and hyper partisan bigots are quick to lay blame, but forget about the extended severe drought in LA and hurricane force winds which have been made worse by climate change.
No doubt they think it was the mayor of Ft Mac, Lyton and Jasper that were at fault because their communities were partly destroyed!
Proving once again you can't fix stupid!

Fire chief said a home on fire would get 3 fire trucks on site…there were 8000 homes on fire so there are NOT that many trucks in the entire state…Unfortunately .maga repubs spreading Misinformation Again thru their Bullshit spreader Fox,

What happened when "man" wasn't around to start or put out any large forest fires?
Problem is "man" doesn't want Mother Nature to do any of her own house cleaning!
When has trying to control forces greater than man ever worked. When Mother Nature decides..... get out of the way!Last edited by farmaholic; Jan 15, 2025, 09:32.

Mike Rowe episode.
Has some interesting numbers.
I'd say blame the Chucks for the insane fuel load.

When winds are blowing 50mph gusting to 100mph Mother nature is a bitch.
If they had those kinds of winds at a fire here everyone would be back in camp for obvious safety. If you were on the side of a mountain it would blow you away.
They have lots of fires and have lots of equipment.
Fires happen often because it seldom rains and everyone loves their trees .
They don't cut right of ways for power lines. The primary cause of fires.

One reporter said that palm trees are like 60 foot torches. The wind blowing through unpruned palms spread burning embers everywhere. That being said, this is not the first fire in that neighborhood. They know exactly where they live, in the middle of fire heaven.
Due diligence would be building with clay tile roofs, stucco walls, no propane tanks around, maybe under swimming pools sisterns with ready to go pumps.
When we go to harvest lentils in hot, dry conditions, we go prepared with water truck, good pump and long fire hose. A tractor with disc is close by just in case a spark sets the field ablaze.
This also being said, the reservoirs were empty because governor was watering the smelt and hydrants were not functioning. All the excuses the green lefties want to make add up to this catastrophie.
If you can’t protect your home from threats like fire, don’t build there or build a moat. these homes are worth 10, 20, 50 million dollars. A few million spent on fire protection wouldn’t kill them.Last edited by sumdumguy; Jan 15, 2025, 11:02.

They were quick to say serves us right when Ft Mac burnt.
This is Jasper on a grand scale.
I'm lightly involved in property in So Cal. Chuck heaven.

You can't stop a fire when it is up in the treetops blowing 50MPH.
But were they ready in position to put out the inevitable small fire that got it going?
Sometimes these situations remind me of failed generational transfers on farms.
Too many other priorities and neglecting the basics that are needed to ensure success.
Things go down hill quickly when you get distracted and take your eye off the ball.
Lose sight of basic priorities with the wrong people in charge.
In this case there were obvious failures in infrastructure and short and long term prevention preparations.
The money was all spent on other "priorities"?
