Chuck, it is highly amusing that you are so ill informed that you keep bringing up Alabama as if that is some sort of economic insult.
Did you know that Ontario now has a GDP productivity per capita equivalent to Alabama?
And that the numbers in Alabama are quickly increasing while those in Ontario are quickly decreasing?
You like to quote Trevor Tombe has some sort of economic authority:
Many Southern U.S. states are still poor, but expanding fast — faster than lagging Canadian provinces
From another source:
According to data from the World Bank and Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Alabama passed Canada’s GDP per capita in 2019 and now Canada has fallen below the level of Alabama, usually considered the poorest state in the United States.?

We once took a holiday through the Southeastern states. Landed in Birmingham traveled through Alabama and Florida and Georgia and South Carolina.
Met a lot of really great people, really enjoyed the trip. Learned a lot.
Like most parts of the world, rural people have a lot in common.
I highly recommend going to see for yourself. And getting off the beaten trail and interacting with the locals. You might want to bring a translator...
My late Uncle somehow married a lady from Alabama. I never did meet her. Suspect she was a gold digger.
